Cheers: We toast with wine & beer

The year 2021 was full of big anniversaries. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Technik Museum Sinsheim and the 30th anniversary of Technik Museum Speyer, we look back on many exciting, exhausting, and special moments. However, a celebration of that kind would not be complete without the right beverages to toast with. Throughout the last months, we have been working on our very own selection of anniversary wine and beer.  As of now, the results can be purchased at the museums’ shops and online. “Choosing the wineries and breweries was easy. Since the high quality of our products is very important to us and we wanted to support local companies, we decided on our partners quite quickly”, explains Andreas Hemmer, director of Technik Museum Speyer.

White Wine
Winery Wolf from Birkweiler is a winery form the Palatinate region in the west of Germany. It looks back on over 400 years of tradition. Since 2010, Klaus and Mathias Wolf run the winery together.  A strong family bond secures the continuation of the family tradition. For the anniversary wine, the Wolfs chose a White Burgundy (2020) – limited edition. The soil on their vineyards consists predominantly of Muschelkalk (a type of limestone), Rotliegendes, or Buntsandstein (both are types of sandstone). They give each wine an individual flavour. “Each wine combines both, modern and traditional aspects, which leads to a unique taste”, explains Mathias Wolf.

Red Wine
Winery Leonhard from Pleisweiler-Oberhofen contributes the counterpart for the white wine: a dry red wine cuvée (2018). The wine was bottled exclusively for the anniversary and can only be purchased at the shops of the Technik Museen. Special care, experience, and a lot of effort and passion characterize the winery and its exquisite wines. The sunny, mild, almost Mediterranean climate of the southern German Wine Route enhances the flavours of this delicious wine. “We pay special attention to the maturation and treatment of every single wine, so they can unfold their individual characteristics. That is how we create classy, delicate, and clean wines. We only use crop protection that spares the beneficial organisms, and exclusively treat the soil with sustainable products”, says viticulture technician Steffen Leonhard. Both wineries are members of an association called “Die junge Südpfalz”, which supports new generations of winemakers in the southern Palatinate region.

Beer
The anniversary beer is a special edition contributed by the brewery Heidelberger Brauerei. Their brewing tradition dates all the way back to 1753. Here, the traditional art of brewing meets modern technology and modern-day taste trends in beer. The brewing process complies with strict rules, is based on years and years of experience, and includes only selected local resources. It is inspired by the beer ordinance called “Heidelberger Bierordnung” from 1603. “What matters are taste and quality. In 2017, we received the “Bundesehrenpreis”, a federal honorary price awarded by the German Agricultural Society DLG, for outstandingly high quality. However, the high quality isn’t the only positive aspect about our beer. It is also brewed with sustainability and an efficient use of resources in mind” explains CEO Michael Mack.

Comedian Tim Poschmann, known as “Winzer Bu” (lit. winemaker boy), from comedy theatre Deidesheim, is helping us out in the matter of marketing. When he found out about our plans, he immediately offered to become our brand ambassador. In March 2020, Poschmann started releasing videos about the Palatinate region, the German Wine Route, and their visitors – as a joke. With his popular phrase “Ja wo sinn se donn?”, which means “So, where are they?” in a German dialect, the comedian’s clips reached over 2.5 million views, which is why they have a certain cult status. He then started performing at various theatres and played sold-out shows at the drive-in cinema in Speyer in 2020. That was also how he got in touch with the Technik Museum. “I am a huge fan of the Technik Museen, and as a native Palatine, I have a passion for wine, obviously. I love how they work with local partners. I am partly a ‘Winzer Bu’ and my heart beats for Heidelberg, so I am more than glad to support the Technik Museen”, Poschmann says smirking. The results of the cooperation with “Winzer Bu” for our anniversary beverages will be shared via the social media channels of the Technik Museen throughout the next weeks.
